From a geoscience-wise point of view, “Geopark” is defined a place where people can have fun and learn geology and topography. This promotional movie introduces Bungo-Ono Geopark with the voice of local people says “This is Geopark!”. They guide you the dynamic view of the Geopark that was created by volcano of Mt. Aso 90,000 years ago.

 

 

There are many must-see spots in Bungo-Ono City such as Taizakokyo Gorge was made by erosion of the current of Okudake River, Todoro Bridge which has the largest arch in the country, Deai Bridge which has the second largest arch in the country, the largest carved stone image of Buddha in the prefecture called “Magaibutsu” at Fukoji Temple, Harajiri Falls which suddenly appears flat plain and more!

Arriving by airplane:
Approximately 1h 30mins from Haneda airport to Oita airport. About an 1hour bus ride from Oita airport to Oita Station. About 45mins from Oita Station to Miemachi Station by JR Hohi Honsen Line.

Arriving by train:
Approximately 4hrs 45mins from Tokyo station to Kokura station by JR Tokaido bullet train. About 1hr 30 mins from Kokura station to Oita Station by JR Kagoshima Honsen Line. About 45mins from Oita Station to Miemachi Station by JR Hohi Honsen Line.

Inazumi Underwater Limestone Cave

The pyroclastic flow of Mt. Aso’s volcano made the great nature in Bungo-Ono City. One of them is Inazumi Underwater Limestone Cave which was sunk in the water because of the volcano 300,000 years ago. It’s the largest underwater limestone cave in the country which has beautiful marine blue scenery.

Also Chinda Falls is as popular as Harajiri Falls that is known as the waterfalls which was drawn by a Japanese painter Sesshu. There used to be Chinda Power Plant and it’s currently a scenic ruins look like the remains of Rome. Mt.Sobo which is located on the border of Miyazaki Prefecture, is popular scenic spot as well. Huge granite from the woods is absolutely the mystery of the nature! Mt.Sobo is also known as a habitat of Japanese serow which is the Special Natural Monument.

Local food of Bungo-Ono City

Bungo-Ono City is a great producer of bitter gourd. “Koneri” is the most popular local summer taste which is made with egg plants and squash with soysauce or miso flavor. Also, “Saburo-nabe(hot pot)” has been popular local food in winter recently. It’s a hotpot cuisine with locally produced taros, yam cake, wild boar in local specialty Ogata miso flavored stew. There are more good local food such as clear chicken soup called “Tori-jiru”, pork innerds, Japanese Sake and more. Especially ready-to-eat Torijiru and Sake are popular for souvenirs as well.
